Be the older fish.

Take the time. Read this post by a Carolina student (my intern!) on focusing:

"I heard a graduation speech recently that told the story of two fish who swim by an older fish. The older fish happily asks, “How’s the water, boys?” A few moments after swimming past the older fish, the young fish asks his friend, “What the hell is water?”

I’ve been trying this new thing called focusing. You’ve heard this term your entire life from scolding teachers and parents. But recently, I have started to think about what the word really means. In this age, people are genuinely terrified of focusing on one task at a time. When we’re having conversations or studying or sharing a meal, we’re also tweeting, texting, looking at Instagram. No one just focuses on the task at hand, and it’s not always necessary. I come to the end of too many conversations wishing I had paid more attention during it — whether they are shared with my best friend or a complete stranger.

And it goes beyond conversations. I am putting a conscious effort into being more focused and present in all aspects of my life — walking to class, grocery shopping, working out, drinking with friends. I find myself coming home at the end of a day, from a campus with thousands of students, having only talked to one or two real humans, only observing the lecture notes or the texts I received on my phone.

I just don’t want to realize, at the end of any chapter of my life, that I was living in water and didn’t even realize it. I want to always observe and soak in the experiences of my day, one at a time. I want to be in the conversations I am having, I want to be in my walk through this beautiful campus. I want to be in this little college town while I am in this little college town. Nothing would be worse than moving to a new part of my life, without ever really understanding and appreciating the one I was in before."

Happy Friday

While we're on a Bentley note, he's the best partner in blogging there is.

Happy Friday from both of us! Live it up out there in this great big world.

Nails!

It's time... Dark nail colors! I love some You Don't Know Jacques by OPI. I combined this with my party nail in Deborah Lippmann's Boom Boom Bow. While I'm not the best nail painter, I've got happy nails. What are some of your favorite fall shades I need to try?

P.S. Rewined candle in back is a great fall scent - Pinot Noir - leather, cranberry, fig and violet. I highly recommend this one if you haven't tried these candles yet.

Love these murals in the Lilly Pulitzer dressing rooms at The Streets at Southpoint.

Life Lately

Bentley's been wishing people happy birthday - he loves birthdays.

I woke up at 4 a.m. one Saturday for an annual beer event. Crazy, right? Yes, but it was also pretty fun, and I already confessed I'd do it again. It was a good time with friends, lots of excitement when we got what we drove all that way / waited for (Bourbon Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate), and we also met a cool culture of people who shared their rare beers with us like we were friends for years. Foothills let everyone bring their own coolers of beer into the brewery. What a party! It doubled over as the perfect tailgate for Carolina's home opener.

We had seats in the Pope Box for this game... What a treat! We enjoyed eats from shrimp and grits to Tar Heel sugar cookies. By the end of the game, whew, what a day. When Hank and I got home we had a package. Hank surprised me with a sticker book I'd had my eye on.

Fall is Umstead Park time, and it makes Bentley's week. We went on what Hank and I thought was a short hike, but Bentley decided to lay right in the middle of the trail and take a rest. Oh my.

Last Friday Night (I had to... I love Katy Perry) I hosted a Slumber Party with my SILS and MIL. We partied until the a.m. complete with painting nails, snacks, drinks and party favors.

I had some me and the man (Bentley) time while Hank was on his yearly Man Trip. Bentley and I roamed around Duke Gardens and watched the beginnings of a delightful wedding ceremony.

My sweet mom came up on Sunday for a girlie girl day. We had breakfast at the Farmer's Market, shopped around and purchased some great loot complete with a painted pumpkin named Jill.

We did a little shopping at the mall and ended our night at our favorite, Angus Barn. We had the best service and took a tour around the wine cellar where we were met with a $15,000 bottle of wine, seriously!? That's just crazy. I enjoyed my root beer float just fine.

I skipped out on working out during lunch one day this week, because it was too pretty not to enjoy campus. I walked by the sights like a tourist, grabbed Yogurt Pump and even completed the day with souvenirs.

Today I had some fun in a photo booth at a local hotel's opening. Friends are the best present.

Lucky Score

"In her Lanikai studio overlooking the beautiful Mokulua islands, Hawaiian-based ceramist Mary Pat Wentz, or MP as she's known, casts porcelain and white stoneware clays into precious pottery. Sprinkle this pretty pink salt from the waters of Molokai into MP's porcelain salt cellar for a little R&R."

This lucky score came in at $1.95 (down from $34). I love all things pottery, and handmade in the USA, so I was happy to find this set all by its lonesome at Anthro. I love Anthropologie all of the time, but especially when I come across a lucky score like this.

All That Glitters

Just added a little sparkle to the Etsy shop. Check it out!

Summer Dinner

When Hank and I got back from Charleston, I was ready to put my new mermaid platter to use. I couldn't hold the suspense. We had a light summer dinner with chips and salsa, my favorite Greek tortellini salad and none other than deviled eggs.

Mermaids were everywhere.

Charleston: Pig Ears!

Sunday was for brunch at HUSK (neighbors with Poogan's Porch). Love their tablescape.

I would highly recommend this place. It was great. What to pick...

Hank and I started with their "Buffalo" Crispy Pig Ear Lettuce Wraps with Sweet Marinated Peppers and Red Onion, Benne Seeds. These were very different and really good.

For my main brunch item, I selected their Buttermilk Biscuit Melt {bologna and cheddar, fried egg, spicy mayo, compressed watermelon}. Yum! Hank had their catfish, Kathleen and I were brunch twins, and Brad had their wood-fired blueberry flap jacks with bacon.

I don't think I could miss out on going to this place next time - menu is always a-changin'.

Charleston: #HelloHootie

On Saturday we slept in late, grabbed breakfast at the hotel and made our way to Sullivan's Island. It's more local, less tourist (probably because the alcohol fine is $1,400).

For some reason (probably the clouds) we didn't wear bathing suits, AND there was a river before the beach. So... We did a lot of trial and error to make it across. You would think yeah this is shallow, I'm going to make it, then boom, you were just about in too deep. But, we finally made it, and as always with this beach, it was worth it.

We played on the beach for a bit, finding seashells, drawing in the sand and such before heading to Page's Okra Grill for lunch. Bloody Mary for lunch? Hair of the dog (or the horse).

After getting ready at the hotel, we were back on the streets for our Hootie pregame. We stopped by The Gin Joint for cocktails - I had their gin fizz. Then we found ourselves at Pearlz with outdoor seating, a great waitress and delicious everything. I really liked their Southern Fried Oysters and the whole concept of them really. Dip your fried oyster in a bit of buffalo sauce and blue cheese with a side of celery... perfect pregame delight.

Then we were on our way to Hootie & the Blowfish on Daniel's Island... The main event.

The concert was ah-mazing. We danced and sang all night, in glow glasses, and it was great.

Charleston: Fire!

The reason for the season. Well, one reason for the trip. We met up with our friends Kathleen and Brad. They coasted in right in time for our dinner reservation at COAST.

I've been craving oysters since New Bern, so that plus a little bubbly... I was in Charleston heaven. ... Until our bread basket caught on fire (that was a first!). It got a little too close to the candle. In any event, I love this restaurant to no end. We hit up a couple of bars by night: The Rooftop Bar at Vendue Inn and Wet Willie's (wall of frozen drinks). Where I would not recommend is The Kickin' Chicken for late night bites... Yikes! Everything was 50 shades of bad - including the band. When they finished one song, one band member looked at the other and said, dude, what song was that? Exactly. Next time I'm thinking end the night at Mynt with late night at Juanita Greenberg's (Mexican until 2 a.m.). Memorable night!

Charleston: It's a Rainbow

It's a rainbow of lovely homes... Rainbow Row. I'll take the Carolina blue one.

Charleston: The Battery

White Point Gardens is most beautiful. It's right on the harbor in Charleston. The gazebo especially holds a place in my heart, because it's where Hank and I got engaged.

Hey! There's Hank hanging from the same tree as last time (right before it was go time!).

It was certainly a gorgeous day for a stroll down memory lane.

THIS city! I just head to toe love it.

Charleston: Mermaid Cute

We took to the streets for a little shopping. First stop, Piggly Wiggly to pick up a bottle of Fat & Juicy's new margarita mix. We strolled over to the The Charleston Beer Exchange for some craft brews - weekend stock up style. Then we made our way to King Street for some window shopping. I had to check out Moon & Lola's new location, and it was delightful.

Then it was onward to my favorite potter's studio - Elizabeth Carlton. Come on in!

We met! I love Elizabeth's work - she truly is my favorite potter. Her pieces are fun (and more fun), full of vivid colors and all levels of whimsy. I made a happy new purchase to add to the collection that is... (surprise!) a platter. It's as mermaid cute as can be. I would have more than a million platters if I lived here (and I wouldn't mind it one bit).
