"Unlike any other city in the world, Paris has underneath it a whole other urban space comprised of abandoned rock quarries, waterways, a sophisticated sewer system, a dense subway system, shopping centers and catacombs. Throughout history stories have been told of political dissidents, thieves, partying beatniks, spelunkers, artists and phantoms, all wondering in a subterranean city of dark under the City of Light."
I find this to be fascinating. A world underneath a world - completely contrasting each other. I want to read the journalistic account of this, City of Light, City of Dark, Exploring Paris Below by Valerie Broadwell. The author spent time exploring this area herself, meeting the people who dwell in this underworld. Not to mention, Broadwell picked the best cover for her book, an original piece by my favorite artist, Elaine O'Neil. I've had a passion for Paris since middle school, so this naturally seems like a must-read for me, and perhaps for you too.
